PAST UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS

Heather Lee

2018-2020

I am a biology major with the goal of becoming a wildlife biologist. Here at the LOHE lab, I am a surveying bird diversity using sound recordings. I am also creating a catalog of vocalizations for the endangered Palila.

Ashley Romero

2018-2020

I am currently using the sound analysis software RavenPro 1.5 to identify and isolate rare Hawaiian forest bird vocalizations from recordings on Maui.

Russ Masuda

2020

Worked on Puaiohi selections for song-learning algorithm

Keion Anderson

2020

Worked with Raven Pro 1.5 as part of a Directed Studies in the lab

Kyra Robinson

2019

I worked on `Alalā call types!

Jeremy Levey

2019

I helped study bird words by selecting and categorizing `Ōma`o vocalizations in Raven.

Paul Duya

2019

I worked to create a selection of `Alalā calls to be used for developing an algorithm.

Leah Wyzykowski

2018 - 2019

I helped analyze the permanent recorders to sort when it rains so that a program can be developed that automatically shows when a recording has rain.

Rachel Grunnill

2018 - 2019

I did an internship in avian ecology here at the LOHE lab working on `Ōma`o vocalizations.

Rachel was a biology student at the University of Manchester, England while with the LOHE lab.

Alice Clements

2018 - 2019

I interned at the LOHE bioacoustics lab for a year and worked on a range of projects including `Alalā vocalizations and behavior.

Alice was a zoology student at the University of Manchester, England while with the LOHE lab.

Kary Perez

2018 - 2019

Hi! I identified bird vocalization and determined the frequencies that certain species of birds communicate at in both Costa Rica and Hawai`i's forest.

Elke Windschitl

2018

I was junior at UH Hilo on a National Student Exchange from Iowa State University where I majored in animal ecology and biology. I worked in the LOHE lab looking for helicopter noise in various recordings.

Cole Dill-DeSa

2017 - 2018

I was a student at HCC when I was volunteering at the LOHE bioacoustics lab for a semester, helping with various projects around the lab.

Eirlys Tysall

2017 - 2018

Eirlys worked in the the LOHE Bioacoustics lab at UH Hilo for a year, helping with various Hawaiian forest bird vocalization studies, including `Ōma`o vocalizations.

Eirlys was a student at the University of Manchester while with the LOHE lab.

Elizabeth Lough

2017 - 2019

Elizabeth Lough was an undergraduate student who assisted Keith Burnett on transects and song selections for Kohala forest birds. Elizabeth also helped with song selections for Kaua`i forest birds and various lab tasks!

Linda Xiong

2017

Linda's working on selecting and creating data tables for the Hawaiian Crow, or `Alalā vocalizations in Raven Pro song analysis software.

Kylie Rich

2017

I’m working on analyzing nocturnal vocalization data of the native Hawaiian crow, the `Alalā. With the `Alalā being a diurnal bird, these data are a pretty exciting insight into this bird’s unique behaviors!

Aryana Henthrone

2016 - 2017

Aryana was a Visual Analytics intern through the EPSCoR Internship program. She conducted sound analysis on `Alalā (Hawaiian Crow) call recordings to obtain usable information for archiving purposes.

Grace Tredinnick

2016 - 2018

I worked to identify and isolate native bird calls and species in Costa Rica.

Jessica Loeffler

2016

When I first started in the bioacoustics lab I helped search for `Alalā calls. Afterwards, I helped with the `Ōma`o project by finding and identifying `Ōma`o calls and songs in multiple recordings.

Shawna Wolff

2016

I isolated and made tables of recorded sounds from the `Alalā (Hawaiian crow).

Summah Te Kahika-Heemi

2016

I completed an independent study with guidance from Ann and Esther, sorting through the Hawaiian `Alalā bird song data recordings that they have collected out in the field. It was an awesome opportunity to gain lab experience using the Raven Interactive sound analysis software and to explore the discipline of bioacoustics.

Beatriz Fraga

2016

Beatriz worked in the lab for the summer of 2016, analyzing differences in the soundscapes of Hawai`i and Costa Rica.

Brazilian was undergraduate student with the Brazil Scientific Mobility Program (BSMP).

Shannon Wilson

2016

I assisted Angela in documenting all songs and calls of male and female `i`iwi and investigating their behavior and social interactions.

Heather Hart

2016

In the lab I measured bird sound.

Javier Onate Casado

2016

I worked with Raven selecting various vocalizations and on playback tests with Hawai`i `elepaio.

Magnus Williams

2016

I used Raven software to find and collate `Ōma`o songs and calls for Nicole Fernandez's graduate work.

Kelly Finn

2016

I assisted with selecting songs from field recordings.

Natalie Hagemann

2015 - 2016

I assisted with projects by identifying and sorting field recordings.

Molly Harris

2015 - 2016

I identified `Ōma`o and Hawai`i `amakihi calls in Raven and assisted with LiDAR mapping in the field.

Julia Kovacs

2015

I assisted with various projects, such as selecting `Alalā vocalizations.

Nicole Preston

2015

I worked on classifying Palila vocalizations recorded at the Keauhou Bird Conservation Center (KBCC) in Volcano, Hawai`i.
