BirdCLEF 2022 Contest!
The LOHE Bioacoustics Lab is collaborating with Cornell Lab of Ornithology and the Google Bioacoustic Group as well as others to host a public coding competition called BirdCLEF 2022! This exciting competition focuses on creating birdsong classification models in the hopes that new ideas and models will help to improve BirdNET!

'Alalā ambassadors at the Panaewa Zoo!
We're so excited that two ʻAlalā are now at Panaewa Zoo in their new enclosure. These two ambassadors are named Pano Pau and Loli'ana. The LOHE Lab is currently recording their vocalizations to see how they will change in their new environment over time.

endangered ʻuaʻu observed on Maunakea in more than 60 years
What an exciting re-discovery! Our native 'ua'u, Hawaiian petrel have been observed nesting on Maunakea for the first time in over 60 years! The LOHE Bioacoustics Lab has been working to find these amazing seabirds since 2017. Success!

Audubon Society Hawaii Birds book 7th edition
Eleven photographs by LOHE/Hart Lab's Ann Tanimoto-Johnson were selected to be used in the new Hawai'i Audubon Society Hawaii Birds Book 7th edition. She was also invited to present at their (virtual) annual meeting as one of the photograph contributors.

Two Hart Lab members graduate from TCBES Master's Program
Graduate students Erin Netoskie and Karen Gallardo-Cruz in the Hart lab graduated from the Tropical Conservation Biology and Environmental Science program with their Master of Science degree this December - congrats!
Several members of the Hart Lab including Kristina Paxton, Erin Netoskie, Karen Gallardo-Cruz, Marty Kawasaki, and Patrick Hart traveled to Anchorage, Alaska to present on-going research at the annual American Ornithological Society!
"Maunakea at Night" presentation outreach event at ˊImiloa
Lab manager and research technician, Ann Tanimoto-Johnson, presented on the behavior and vocalizations of nocturnal Hawaiian birds and bats.
After half a century, the endangered ˊUaˊu, also known as the Hawaiian Petrel (Pterodroma sandwichensis) has been found on Maunakea thanks to acoustic recorders deployed by the LOHE lab in collaboration with the Office of Maunakea Management at the University of Hawaiˊi at Hilo.
Hawaiˊi Forest & Trail has donated $25,000 to the University of Hawaiˊi at Hilo Biology Department to support research and technologies to reduce mosquito populations and suppress the spread of avian diseases in Hawaiˊi.
Kristina Paxton and Patrick Hart were awarded a grant from the Disney Conservation Fund to study how captive ˊAlala vocalizations may be changing as they adapt to being released in the wild.
