Mosquito population monitoring and the early identification of mosquito invasion into high elevation forests is critical to safeguarding remaining native Hawaiian forest bird populations.
The LOHE lab conducts research to monitor the invasion of avian-disease carrying mosquitoes into high-elevation forest bird refugia in the face of climate change, and works to develop innovative techniques to improve mosquito monitoring. Collaborators include state and federal agencies such as Hakalau Forest National Wildlife Refuge, US Fish and Wildlife Service, Hawaiʻi Department of Land and Natural Resources, and USGS Pacific Island Ecosystems Research Center.
